The rowhome was originally constructed in 1852 without embellishment or ornamentation in a then blue-collar neighborhood of Baltimore known as Otterbein. Given the history, simplicity and restraint were overarching drivers in every decision made during the renovation. The small footprint required creative space saving solutions such as a hinged marble countertop, assisted by gas pistons, providing access to basement storage while maximizing countertop space. The kitchen design incorporated economical ideas such as a standard stainless-steel refrigerator elevated on a low plinth and stainless-steel cabinet above. This gives the refrigerator a monumental presence similar to more high-end brands.
