Founded in 1939, the Baltimore Yacht Club sits on a grass knoll atop Sue Island at the mouth of the Middle River, with unobstructed views of the Chesapeake Bay. Following a flood that devastated most of the main floor, SM+P was engaged to redesign the interior. Two priorities emerged: enlarging a bar that the membership had outgrown, and improving circulation that required passing through informal dining to reach the formal dining room. SM+P’s solution — the ‘Island Bar’ — increased bar seating while creating a central circulation corridor connecting all spaces. The renovation modernises the clubhouse for a growing membership while respecting the waterfront character the Club is known for.
