In 2019, SM+P Architects was commissioned to design a multi-unit residential addition above four historic brick carriage houses along Morton Street in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighbourhood. The design maintains the streetscape scale and character of the existing carriage houses while incorporating all four buildings into a single mixed-use project — negotiating their differing upper levels into functional office space and carefully inserting new structure above to accommodate 54 additional residential units. Currently in progress, this project demonstrates SM+P’s skill at the demanding intersection of historic preservation and new construction.
