In the heart of Hampden, the owners of Good Neighbor chose an old hardware store for a coffee, houseware, and literary retreat for the community. The storefront is clad in slats of sapele mahogany and soft green dimensional tile with brass corner accents. At the heart of the space: a brutalist concrete coffee bar and espresso workbench with a woven tatami-inspired cloud hovering above — a juxtaposition that captures the space’s character perfectly. White oak built-ins conceal utilities; a beam ‘lean-on’ accommodates ladder retail shelving and doubles as a hall to the restrooms and exterior deck. SM+P worked with the owner to incorporate the community’s character throughout — a retail design project that has become a Hampden institution.
