SM+P, working with GE-T Architects of New York, designed a new 4,000-square-foot quality control laboratory for Pompeian, Inc within their existing facility in east Baltimore. The new space is separated from the rest of the hundred-year old olive oil bottling factory by a custom-built wall of stainless steel fins and laminated glass. Within the laboratory, a rigid plan with clean lines, glass partitions, and an illuminated ceiling provide an uncluttered working environment for the scientists and their delicate instrumentation. A library counterbalances the technical aspects of the laboratory. This small, quiet room is subtly lit and completely wrapped in an olive ash veneer that was custom milled from a log sourced in Cyprus.
